Internship
KeHE
Internship Overview
I interned at KeHE in Naperville, IL during the summer of 2019. I worked on various screen flows and features for the Connect Retailer application. Additionally, I helped with the research and early design layout of KeHE’s Phoenix Design System.
The Company
KeHE distributes natural & organic, specialty and fresh products to retailers across the U.S. and Canada. Headquartered in Naperville, Illinois, KeHE was founded in 1953 by Art Kehe, an entrepreneur who started the business delivering food to retailers in the Midwest. Today’s KeHE is an employee owned company. KeHE has experienced rapid growth in recent years derived from its own organic business growth and several strategic acquisitions, including Tree of Life in 2010, Nature’s Best in 2014 and Monterrey Provision Company in 2016.

Learnings
Interviewing, Building a Design System, Digital Prototyping, Agile, Cross-discipline Collaboration
My Contributions
Enhanced the KeHE Retailer website by prototyping new features and screen layouts.
Researched and designed the KeHE Phoenix Design System in order to create unison amongst all developers and designers.
Actively engaged in daily stand-up meetings and collaborated with multidisciplinary members of the team.
What I Learned
How the design team and development team work together and make compromises.
How components work and the importance of maintaining consistent patterns amongst all platforms.
How much work goes into creating a design system and learning the entire process.
KEHE PHOENIX DESIGN SYSTEM
One of the main projects I worked on was the KeHE Phoenix Design System. KeHE did not have an established design system, so I was able to partake in the very beginning of its creation. I contributed to the design system by conducting interviews with various stakeholders that would utilize the design system, in order to understand their needs for the design system and what requirements they wanted to see within it. Once we had the requirements, I started designing what the design system would look like. Lastly, I documented the CSS of the components we were currently using within the design team, so that the developers could create them properly.
